into a consumer activity

Because an appetite for God is easily manipulated into a consumer activity, we need these wise, sane friends as guides and companions. There are entrepreneurs among us who see the wide-spread hunger for spirituality as a marketplace and are out there selling junk food. The gullibility of the unwary who bought relics from itinerant monks in the Middle Ages - splinters of wood from the true cross, finger bones from the saints, a few pieces of thread from Jesus’ seamless robe - is more than matched by North Americans in matters of spirituality.

We are trained from the cradle to be good consumers. It is understandable that we seek to satisfy our hunger for God along the lines in which we have been brought up. But it is not excusable, for we have clear counsel in the Gospels to steer us away from this consumer world: “Blessed are the poor … Deny yourself, take up your cross, and follow me … Love not the world nor the things that are in the world.” And our Lord’s counsel in confirmed and expanded in numerous ways by our wise evangelical ancestors in the faith.

The world with all its wanting, wanting, wanting is on the way out - but whoever does what God wants is set for eternity.
- 1 John 2.17

SUNDAY

At LHF, we aim to make Sundays an integral part of getting us back in-step with the rhythm and cadence of our Creator/Redeemer. It’s a chance to hear again who we are and whose we are. Our worship, with all of its imperfections, is a response to the grace of God.

Here’s a general framework for our service for January 29:

10:45
pre-service (gym reserved for prayer + pausing)

11:00
invitation to worship
announcements/offering
community prayer - Youth Coaches
message - What is Membership? - Kyung
response
benediction

Service Notes:

  • please bring a mug/thermos for some free gourmet coffee or tea
  • children + youth go to their own service/class after community prayer
  • any service cancellations due to weather will be mentioned here by 8:30am

announcements

If you would like to receive our announcements by email, visit the Contacts page.

Being Renters at Seaview.  We have had complaints from the Seaview staff on how we are leaving their rooms. In particular, we have to work together to ensure that the Music Room and the Library are left as we found them. Children cannot be in either room without an adult or responsible teenager present. Please also ask your kids to leave all books, magazines, and musical instruments alone. Thanks for your help in this matter.

Membership Class.  1/29 (Sun), 1:30-3:30 @ Clark + Glo’s. If you are interested in becoming a member at LHF, or just want to know more about how we work, what we believe, etc., please RSVP with Gloria for this meeting.

AGM.  We have a lot of big items that we are praying through as a church. If you are a member, or just interested in LHF’s future, please come to these meetings:

  • 2/5 @ 10:25 - voting on whether to move back to ROCC (please arrive by 10:15)
  • 2/26 @ 12:30 - voting on the 2012 budget

We will have some food at both meetings (snack for 2/5, lunch for 2/26), and there will be childcare for the 2/26 meeting. Please pray, sit, and listen for direction and discernment in this process.

Youth Outreach Trip.  4/13.  Sue, Kara, and Samantha will be traveling to Bluefields, Nicaragua with Samaritan’s Purse to deliver shoeboxes. If you would like to support them through prayer or finances, please talk to Sue. All donations are tax receiptable.

outside events

Outside events are non-LHF sponsored announcements that might interest you.

Faith + Public Issues.  1/25 (Wed), 7pm @ Regent College (or online). Preston Manning is giving a free public lecture on the intersection of faith with the public issues of our time. If you can’t make it out to Regent College, you can listen to the live broadcast online.

Imperfect Parenting of Imperfect Kids.  2/18 (Sat), 9-4pm @ Carey Theological College (UBC Campus). “Not By Love Alone” is a parenting workshop for mothers and fathers (and future parents) who want real help and practical information. Dr. Paddy Ducklow will be focusing on insight and skill building so that you can nurture your children to confidence, faith and maturity. Cost is $55/person, and $90/couple.
